Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 8 small Gala apples
- 4 Tablespoons salted butter
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Crumble Topping
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup oats
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 4 Tablespoons salted butter, chilled and cubed
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Set your oven temperature to 400° F (204° C) to get it ready for baking the stuffed apples.
- Prepare the crumble topping: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, oats, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and cinnamon until well combined. Using a pastry knife or two forks, cut in the chilled, cubed butter until the mixture becomes crumbly. Set this aside for later use.
- Cook the apple filling: Peel and chop 2 of the apples. In a medium saucepan, combine the chopped apples with 4 tablespoons of butter, 1/4 cup light brown sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. Stir the mixture over medium heat for about 8 minutes or until the apples are tender and cooked through. Remove the saucepan from heat once done.
- Prepare the apples: Take the remaining 6 apples and slice off their tops. Using a spoon, carefully scoop out the flesh from these apples to create a bowl-like cavity, leaving enough apple intact to hold the filling securely.
- Assemble the stuffed apples: Fill each scooped apple with the warm apple filling from the saucepan. Then, top each filled apple generously with the prepared crumble topping, ensuring a nice layer of crumble on top.
- Bake the stuffed apples: Place the stuffed apples on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes. Bake until the crumble topping is golden and crispy.
- Serve and enjoy: Serve the baked apples warm, ideally accompanied by vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce to enhance the flavor and texture.
Notes
- Use small Gala apples or similarly sized apples for even baking and optimal stuffing capacity.
- Keeping the butter chilled in the crumble topping helps create a crisp, crumbly texture.
- Adjust baking time slightly based on apple size to avoid over or undercooking.
- The dessert is best served warm; reheat gently if serving later.
- For a dairy-free version, substitute butter with vegan margarine or coconut oil.
