Description

Cheddar Ranch Chicken Tater Tot Bake is a comforting and hearty casserole combining tender shredded chicken, creamy ranch-seasoned sauce, melted sharp cheddar cheese, and crispy tater tots baked to golden perfection. This easy-to-make dish is perfect for a family dinner, delivering a deliciously cheesy, savory flavor with minimal prep.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken Mixture

  • 2-3 cups cooked, shredded or diced chicken
  • 1 ounce packet dry ranch seasoning mix
  • 10.5-ounce can condensed cream of chicken soup, undiluted
  • 1/2 cup sour cream or plain Greek yogurt
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup milk
  • Pinch of garlic powder
  • Pinch of onion powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1 cup frozen peas, corn, or mixed vegetable blend

Cheese and Tater Tots

  • 2-3 cups shredded sharp or medium cheddar cheese, divided
  • 32-ounce bag frozen tater tots

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven and prepare dish. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
  2. Cook chicken if needed. If your chicken isn’t already cooked, cook and shred or dice it until you have 2-3 cups of cooked chicken ready for the bake.
  3. Make creamy base. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the undiluted cream of chicken soup, sour cream (or Greek yogurt), and milk until smooth and blended evenly.
  4. Season and combine chicken mix. Add the dry ranch seasoning mix, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper to the creamy base and stir well. Fold in the cooked chicken along with any optional frozen vegetables if using. Then mix in about 1.5 cups of shredded cheddar cheese until everything is evenly coated.
  5. Assemble the bake. Pour the prepared chicken mixture into the greased baking dish and spread it out evenly to form the base layer.
  6. Add tater tots layer. Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single, even layer over the chicken mixture to cover the surface completely.
  7. Top with remaining cheese. Sprinkle the remaining 0.5 to 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the tater tots for a cheesy topping.
  8. Bake until golden and bubbly. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the chicken mixture bubbles around the edges and the tater tots are golden brown and crispy on top.
  9. Rest before serving. Remove the dish from the oven and let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes. This helps the bake set for easier slicing and serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute sour cream with Greek yogurt for a tangier, healthier alternative.
  • Feel free to add vegetables like frozen peas or corn to increase the nutritional value.
  • Ensure chicken is fully cooked before assembling to prevent undercooking.
  • For extra crispiness, broil the bake for the last 1-2 minutes but watch closely to avoid burning.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven for best texture.
