Description

Christmas Crack, also known as Cracker Toffee, is a delightful holiday treat featuring a crispy saltine cracker base topped with a rich, buttery toffee layer, melted chocolate, and colorful sprinkles. This easy-to-make dessert combines sweet and salty flavors with a crunchy texture, perfect for gifting or sharing during festive seasons.

Ingredients

Scale

Cracker Base

  • 40-48 saltine crackers (about 1 1/2 sleeves)

Toffee Layer

  • 1 cup butter (salted or unsalted, 2 sticks)
  • 1 cup brown sugar (packed, dark brown sugar preferred)

Topping

  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (or milk chocolate chips, or white chocolate chips, or combination)
  • ½ cup sprinkles (or M&M’s, crushed candy canes, or other candies of choice)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350℉ (177℃) to prepare for baking the toffee.
  2. Prepare Baking Tray: Line a 15″×10″ rimmed sheet pan with parchment paper or aluminum foil sprayed with cooking spray, or use a nonstick silicone baking mat to prevent sticking.
  3. Arrange Crackers: Lay out the saltine crackers in a single, even layer covering the entire bottom of the pan. Break a few crackers as needed to fill any gaps, ensuring a continuous base.
  4. Make Toffee Mixture: In a medium-sized pot over medium-low heat, combine the butter and dark brown sugar. Stir occasionally and bring the mixture to a rolling boil. Continue boiling for 3 minutes until it bubbles and turns an amber color, indicating caramelization. Remove from heat immediately. (Optional: Use a candy thermometer to ensure the toffee mixture reaches 270℉-290℉.)
  5. Pour Toffee Over Crackers: Carefully and evenly pour the hot toffee mixture over the arranged saltine crackers. Use a spatula to quickly spread and cover all the crackers before the mixture sets.
  6. Bake Toffee: Place the sheet pan in the preheated oven and bake for 3-5 minutes or until the toffee starts bubbling, ensuring a crisp texture.
  7. Add Chocolate Chips: Remove the pan from the oven and immediately scatter the chocolate chips over the hot toffee. Let them sit for 1-2 minutes to soften, then use a spatula to spread the melted chocolate evenly across the surface. If the chocolate isn’t melting well, return the pan to the oven for 1-2 minutes before spreading.
  8. Decorate: Sprinkle your choice of decorations, such as sprinkles, M&M’s, or crushed candy canes, evenly over the melted chocolate before it hardens.
  9. Cool and Set: Let the entire tray cool completely at room temperature or refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour until the toffee and chocolate are fully hardened.
  10. Break Into Pieces: Once hardened, flip the tray over to remove the toffee from the pan and peel off the lining. Use your hands to crack the toffee into bite-sized pieces, or cut it with a sharp knife for more uniform shapes.
  11. Serve and Store: Enjoy your Christmas Crack immediately or store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • Use dark brown sugar for a richer, deeper caramel flavor and color.
  • If you don’t have a candy thermometer, rely on the 3-minute rolling boil as a guide for proper toffee consistency.
  • Make sure to spread toffee quickly while hot to ensure the crackers are evenly coated.
  • You can customize toppings with different candies or nuts for variety.
  • Store the finished toffee in an airtight container to maintain crispness and freshness for up to two weeks.
