Description

Christmas Crack, also known as Cracker Toffee, is a festive and addictive treat made by layering saltine crackers with a caramelized butter and brown sugar toffee, topped with melted chocolate and colorful sprinkles. This easy-to-make dessert combines salty, sweet, and crunchy textures, perfect for holiday gatherings and gift-giving.

Ingredients

Scale

Cracker Base

  • 40-48 saltine crackers (about 1 1/2 sleeves)

Toffee Layer

  • 1 cup butter (salted or unsalted, 2 sticks)
  • 1 cup brown sugar (packed, dark brown preferred)

Topping

  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (or milk chocolate chips, or white chocolate, or combination)
  • ½ cup sprinkles (or M&M’s, crushed candy canes, or candies of choice for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350℉ (175℃) to prepare for baking the toffee.
  2. Prepare Baking Sheet: Line a rimmed 15″×10″ sheet pan with parchment paper or aluminum foil sprayed with cooking spray. Alternatively, use a nonstick silicone baking mat to prevent sticking.
  3. Arrange Crackers: Place the saltine crackers in a single, even layer covering the entire bottom of the prepared pan. Break a few crackers as needed to fill gaps along the edges for full coverage.
  4. Make Toffee: In a medium-sized pot over medium-low heat, melt the butter and add the packed dark brown sugar. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil, stirring occasionally. Maintain the boil for 3 minutes until the mixture bubbles vigorously and turns an amber color. Optionally, use a candy thermometer to reach a temperature of 270℉-290℉ for perfect toffee consistency.
  5. Pour Toffee Over Crackers: Remove the pot from heat and carefully pour the hot toffee evenly over the arranged crackers. Quickly spread the toffee over all crackers using a spatula to ensure even coverage.
  6. Bake Toffee: Place the sheet pan in the oven and bake for 3-5 minutes, until the toffee layer starts bubbling.
  7. Add Chocolate Chips: Remove the pan from the oven immediately and scatter the chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer. Let them sit for 1-2 minutes to soften, then spread the melted chocolate smoothly using a spatula. If the chocolate doesn’t melt easily, return the pan to the oven for 1-2 minutes and then spread again.
  8. Decorate: Sprinkle the top with your choice of sprinkles, M&M’s, crushed candy canes, or other decorative candies while the chocolate is still soft.
  9. Cool and Set: Allow the toffee to cool completely at room temperature, or refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour until the chocolate and toffee harden fully.
  10. Break Into Pieces: Once set, flip the tray over to remove the toffee slab by peeling off the parchment or foil. Break the slab into pieces with your hands or cut into squares using a sharp knife.
  11. Serve and Store: Enjoy your Christmas Crack immediately or store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to one week.

Notes

  • For best results, use dark brown sugar instead of light brown sugar for a richer toffee flavor.
  • You can customize the chocolate topping using any type or combination of chocolate chips.
  • Decorate with various candies like crushed candy canes, sprinkles, or M&M’s to make it festive.
  • Be careful when handling hot toffee as it can cause burns.
  • If cracks form unevenly, warming the toffee slightly can help re-melt chocolate for smoother spreading.
  • Store the Christmas Crack in an airtight container to maintain crispness.
