Description

Christmas Crack, also known as Cracker Toffee, is a delightful and easy-to-make holiday treat featuring a crispy layer of saltine crackers topped with a buttery, caramelized brown sugar toffee, melted chocolate, and festive sprinkles. This no-fuss recipe delivers a perfect combination of sweet, salty, and crunchy textures, making it a crowd-pleaser for holiday gatherings and gift-giving.

Ingredients

Scale

Cracker Base

  • 40-48 saltine crackers (about 1 1/2 sleeves)

Toffee Layer

  • 1 cup butter (salted or unsalted, 2 sticks)
  • 1 cup brown sugar (packed, dark brown sugar preferred)

Topping

  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (or milk chocolate chips, or white chocolate chips, or combination)
  • ½ cup sprinkles (or M&M’s, crushed candy canes, or candies of choice for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350℉ to prepare for baking the toffee layer.
  2. Prepare Pan: Line a rimmed 15″×10″ sheet pan with parchment paper or aluminum foil sprayed with cooking spray, or use a nonstick silicone baking mat to prevent sticking.
  3. Arrange Crackers: Place saltine crackers in a single, even layer on the bottom of the lined sheet pan, breaking a few crackers as necessary to fill any gaps at the edges.
  4. Make Toffee: In a medium pot over medium-low heat, combine butter and packed brown sugar. Bring to a rolling boil and cook while stirring occasionally for 3 minutes, or until bubbling and amber in color. For precision, cook until the toffee reaches 270℉-290℉ if using a candy thermometer.
  5. Pour Toffee over Crackers: Remove the pot from heat and carefully pour the hot toffee evenly over the arranged saltines. Quickly spread with a spatula to cover all crackers.
  6. Bake Toffee: Place the sheet pan in the preheated oven and bake for 3-5 minutes until the toffee mixture is bubbling.
  7. Add Chocolate: Remove the pan from the oven and immediately scatter chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee. Let sit for 1-2 minutes allowing the chocolate to soften.
  8. Spread Chocolate: Use a spatula to spread the melted chocolate uniformly over the toffee. If the chocolate isn’t melting adequately, return the pan to the oven for an additional 1-2 minutes to soften it before spreading.
  9. Add Toppings: Sprinkle your choice of sprinkles, crushed candy canes, M&M’s, or other candies evenly over the melted chocolate while still warm.
  10. Cool and Set: Let the toffee cool completely to harden. This can be done at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  11. Break into Pieces: Once set, flip the baking tray over to remove the toffee slab. Peel off the parchment or foil, then break into pieces by hand or cut with a sharp knife.
  12. Serve and Store: Enjoy immediately or store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature or refrigerated.

Notes

  • Using dark brown sugar enhances the depth of flavor compared to light brown sugar.
  • If cracks appear in the toffee slab, they add to the rustic charm of the snack.
  • Be cautious when handling hot toffee to avoid burns.
  • Chocolate chips type can be adjusted based on preference—semi-sweet, milk, white, or a blend.
  • Adding crushed candy canes adds a festive peppermint flavor perfect for Christmas.
  • Leftover Christmas Crack stored in a cool, airtight container stays fresh for up to two weeks.
