Ingredients
Scale
Dough
- 2 cups Self-Rising Flour (can substitute with all-purpose flour plus baking powder)
- 1 cup Plain Greek Yogurt (regular or fat-free can be used)
Filling
- 1/2 cup Brown Sugar (coconut sugar or stevia blend as alternatives)
- 1 tbsp Cinnamon (adjust to taste)
- 1/4 cup Melted Butter (can substitute with coconut oil for dairy-free)
Glaze
- 1 cup Confectioners’ Sugar (powdered erythritol for keto-friendly)
- 2 tbsp Milk (almond milk or any non-dairy milk can be used)
Toppings
- Food Coloring (optional, natural food coloring recommended or omit)
- 1 cup Sugar or Stevia (for homemade colorful sprinkles)
Instructions
- Prepare the dough: In a mixing bowl, blend 2 cups of self-rising flour with 1 cup of plain Greek yogurt until a soft dough forms. Transfer to a floured surface and knead gently for about 1-2 minutes until smooth and pliable.
- Roll out the dough: Using a rolling pin, flatten the dough evenly on a floured surface to approximately ½-inch thickness, ensuring an even rectangle for the filling to be spread.
- Add the filling: Brush the flattened dough generously with ¼ cup of melted butter. Then sprinkle a mixture of ½ cup brown sugar and 1 tablespoon cinnamon evenly over the butter, covering the surface completely for a flavorful filling.
- Form the rolls: Carefully roll the dough into a log shape starting from one edge. Cut the log into 12 equal pieces using a sharp knife or dental floss for clean cuts. Arrange the rolls cut side up in a greased 8×8 inch baking dish, spacing them slightly apart to allow expansion during baking.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 365-375°F (185-190°C). Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for about 25 minutes or until the rolls turn golden brown and cooked through.
- Prepare the glaze: While the rolls are baking, mix 1 cup confectioners’ sugar with 2 tablespoons milk until smooth and pourable to create a sweet icing.
- Decorate and serve: Once the cinnamon rolls are out of the oven and slightly cooled, drizzle the glaze over them evenly. Sprinkle colorful homemade sprinkles made from 1 cup sugar (or stevia) colored with natural food coloring for a festive Mardi Gras touch. Serve warm.
Notes
- Substitute self-rising flour by mixing all-purpose flour with 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder and ½ teaspoon salt.
- For dairy-free, use coconut oil instead of butter and almond or oat milk for glaze.
- Adjust cinnamon and sugar quantities according to taste preferences.
- Allow rolls to cool slightly before glazing to prevent icing from melting off completely.
- Homemade sprinkles are optional and can be omitted or replaced with store-bought sprinkles.
- Store any leftovers covered at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for 4 days.
