Description

Pretzel Christmas Crack, also known as Pretzel Toffee, is a delightful holiday treat featuring a crispy pretzel base topped with homemade buttery toffee, melted semi-sweet chocolate, and colorful sprinkles. The perfect combination of salty and sweet with a crunchy texture, this easy-to-make dessert is great for gifting or holiday parties.

Ingredients

Scale

Base

  • 40-48 pretzel crisps (or Pretzel Crackers, or 2-3 cups pretzels, not sticks)

Toffee

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks)
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar

Topping

  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup sprinkles (or M&M’s, or candies of choice)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350℉ (177℃) to prepare for baking the toffee layer.
  2. Prepare Baking Sheet: Line a 15″×10″ rimmed sheet pan with parchment paper or aluminum foil sprayed with cooking spray, or use a nonstick silicone baking mat to prevent sticking.
  3. Arrange Pretzels: Place the pretzel crisps in a single layer covering the entire bottom of the lined pan. Break a few pretzels if necessary to fill gaps evenly.
  4. Make Toffee: In a medium pot over medium-low heat, combine the butter and brown sugar. Bring to a rolling boil, stirring occasionally. Boil for 3 minutes until bubbling and amber in color, optionally using a candy thermometer to reach 270℉-290℉. Remove from heat and immediately pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the pretzels, spreading quickly with a spatula to cover them.
  5. Bake Toffee: Place the sheet pan in the oven and bake for 3-5 minutes until the toffee starts bubbling visibly.
  6. Add Chocolate: Remove the pan from the oven. Immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee. Let sit for 1-2 minutes to soften the chips, then spread the melted chocolate evenly with a spatula. If the chocolate does not melt sufficiently, return the pan to the oven for 1-2 minutes and then spread.
  7. Add Toppings: Sprinkle your choice of sprinkles, M&M’s, or candies evenly over the melted chocolate while still warm.
  8. Cool Completely: Allow the toffee to cool and harden at room temperature, or refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour until firm.
  9. Break into Pieces: Once hardened, invert the pan to remove the toffee slab from the parchment or foil. Break into pieces by hand or cut with a sharp knife.
  10. Serve and Store: Serve and enjoy your Pretzel Christmas Crack! Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature or refrigerated.

Notes

  • You can substitute pretzel crisps with pretzel crackers or small pretzel pieces, but avoid pretzel sticks for even coverage.
  • Using a candy thermometer can help achieve the perfect toffee consistency between 270℉ and 290℉.
  • For even melting, spread chocolate chips quickly while toffee is hot; reheating briefly in the oven helps if chocolate hardens too soon.
  • Customize toppings with festive M&M’s, holiday sprinkles, or any favorite candies to personalize your treat.
  • Store in an airtight container to keep the toffee crisp and fresh for up to one week.
