Ingredients
Scale
Filling
- 3 small/medium apples, peeled and sliced thin
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon
- Pinch of sea salt
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
Pastry
- 1 puff pastry sheet (thawed)
- 1 tablespoon melted butter
- 2 tablespoons honey (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (205°C) to ensure it reaches the right temperature for the puff pastry to bake evenly and rise beautifully.
- Prepare Apples: Peel and thinly slice the apples. In a small bowl, toss the apple slices with 2 tablespoons of melted butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and a pinch of sea salt until they are well coated and flavorful.
- Prepare Puff Pastry: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lay the thawed puff pastry sheet on it. Using a sharp knife, score a one-inch border around the perimeter of the pastry without cutting all the way through. This will help the edges puff up and contain the apple juices.
- Dock Pastry Center: Prick the center of the puff pastry inside the scored border several times with a fork to prevent excessive puffing in the middle. Then brush the exposed border with the remaining tablespoon of melted butter.
- Arrange Apples: Neatly arrange the spiced apple slices on the puff pastry within the scored border. You can create three even rows or any design you prefer for an attractive presentation.
- Bake Tart: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for about 20 minutes, or until the pastry edges are puffed and golden brown. Check the tart at the 15-minute mark and then monitor every 2 minutes to avoid over-browning.
- Finish and Serve: Remove the tart from the oven and gently brush the tops of the apples with honey for a shiny, sweet glaze. To thin the honey, microwave it for about 15 seconds before brushing if desired. Allow the tart to cool for several minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
- For a crisper tart, ensure your puff pastry sheet is fully thawed but cold before using.
- You can substitute honey with maple syrup or skip it for a less sweet finish.
- Use firmer apple varieties like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for better texture after baking.
- Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for an indulgent dessert.
- Make sure not to cut fully through the puff pastry when scoring the border to allow proper puffing.
