Description

This Puff Pastry Apple Tart is a delightful and easy-to-make dessert featuring thinly sliced apples arranged on a flaky, golden puff pastry crust, seasoned with warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, and finished with a honey glaze for extra sweetness. Perfect for a quick treat or elegant dessert.

Ingredients

Scale

Fruit and Spices

  • 3 small/medium apples, peeled and thinly sliced
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1½ teaspoons cinnamon
  • Pinch of sea salt

Pastry and Topping

  • 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed)
  • 3 tablespoons melted butter, divided
  • 2 tablespoons honey (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to ensure it’s at the right temperature for baking the tart.
  2. Prepare Apples: Peel and slice the apples very thinly. In a small bowl, toss the sliced apples with 2 tablespoons of melted butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and a pinch of sea salt until evenly coated.
  3. Prepare Pastry Base: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Lay the thawed puff pastry sheet on the parchment. Using a sharp knife, lightly score a 1-inch border around the perimeter of the pastry without cutting all the way through to help the edges puff up and contain the apple juices.
  4. Dock Pastry Center and Butter Border: Poke holes with a fork in the center area of the puff pastry within the scored border. Brush the 1-inch border of the pastry with the remaining 1 tablespoon of melted butter.
  5. Arrange Apples: Neatly arrange the sliced apples over the pastry inside the scored border. Arrange in even rows or get creative with your pattern.
  6. Bake Tart: Place the tart in the preheated oven and bake for about 20 minutes, checking at 15 minutes and then every 2 minutes, until the edges are puffed and golden brown and the apples are tender.
  7. Finish with Honey: Remove the tart from the oven and gently brush the tops of the apples with honey. For easier brushing, microwave the honey for about 15 seconds to thin it out slightly.
  8. Cool and Serve: Allow the tart to cool for several minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Make sure the puff pastry is fully thawed before using for best results.
  • Use tart apples like Granny Smith for a balance of sweetness and tartness.
  • Scoring the pastry border is crucial to help it puff up properly while keeping apple juices contained.
  • Honey glaze adds a beautiful shine and subtle sweetness but is optional.
  • For a dairy-free option, substitute butter with a vegan margarine or coconut oil.
