Ingredients
Scale
Base
- 1 box Ritz crackers (about 30 crackers)
Toffee Layer
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
Toppings
- 2 cups semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips
- 1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy clean-up and to prevent sticking.
- Arrange Crackers: Place a single layer of Ritz crackers on the lined baking sheet without overlapping to ensure even coverage of the toffee.
- Make Toffee Mixture: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the softened butter and brown sugar. Stir constantly until the mixture reaches a boil. Allow it to boil for about three minutes without stirring to develop the toffee flavor.
- Pour Toffee: Immediately pour the hot butter and sugar mixture evenly over the arranged crackers, making sure they are fully covered to form the toffee base.
- Bake Toffee: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for five minutes until the mixture is bubbly, indicating the toffee has set into the crackers.
- Add Chocolate Chips: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee. Let it sit for two minutes so the chocolate chips soften and begin to melt.
- Spread Chocolate and Add Nuts: Using a spatula, spread the melted chocolate over the entire toffee and cracker base. If desired, sprinkle the chopped nuts on top for added texture and flavor.
- Cool and Break: Allow the toffee to cool completely at room temperature until the chocolate is set and firm. Once cooled, break into pieces for serving.
Notes
- For best results, use fresh Ritz crackers to ensure crispness.
- If you prefer a different type of chocolate, feel free to use dark chocolate or white chocolate chips.
- The chopped nuts are optional but add a nice crunchy texture; walnuts, pecans, or almonds work well.
- Store the toffee in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
- Ensure the toffee mixture reaches a full boil and boils for 3 minutes to achieve proper hardening.
