Ingredients
Scale
Crust
- 2 cups crushed pretzels
- 3/4 cup melted butter
- 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
Cream Cheese Layer
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 8 oz whipped topping (such as Cool Whip), thawed
Strawberry Topping
- 6 oz strawberry-flavored gelatin (Jell-O)
- 2 cups boiling water
- 16 oz frozen sliced strawberries (or fresh, hulled and sliced)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the pretzel crust.
- Prepare Crust Mixture: In a medium bowl, thoroughly combine the crushed pretzels, melted butter, and sugar until evenly mixed.
- Form and Bake Crust: Press the pretzel mixture firmly into the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish to create a compact crust. Bake for 10 minutes to set the crust.
- Cool Crust: Allow the crust to cool completely after baking to prevent melting the cream cheese layer.
- Make Cream Cheese Filling: In a separate bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and sugar together until smooth and fluffy for a creamy texture.
- Incorporate Whipped Topping: Gently fold in the thawed whipped topping until the mixture is homogenous and light.
- Spread Cream Cheese Layer: Evenly spread the cream cheese mixture over the cooled pretzel crust, making sure to seal the edges well to prevent the gelatin from leaking through.
- Chill Cream Cheese Layer: Place the dish in the refrigerator to chill while you prepare the strawberry gelatin topping.
- Prepare Strawberry Gelatin: Dissolve the strawberry gelatin powder in 2 cups of boiling water, stirring until completely dissolved.
- Add Strawberries: Stir in the frozen or fresh sliced strawberries into the gelatin mixture and mix until it starts to thicken slightly.
- Assemble and Set: Pour the strawberry gelatin mixture evenly over the cream cheese layer. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours until fully set.
- Serve: Once chilled and set, slice the salad into 12 servings and serve chilled for best texture and flavor.
Notes
- Use fresh strawberries for a brighter flavor or frozen strawberries for convenience. Thaw the frozen strawberries slightly before use.
- Be sure to seal the edges of the cream cheese layer well to prevent the gelatin from leaking through the crust.
- This dessert is best served chilled and can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
- For a lower sugar version, consider using a sugar substitute suitable for baking in the crust and cream cheese layers.
