Description

These Vegan Churros are a delightful plant-based twist on the classic fried pastry. Light, crispy, and coated in cinnamon sugar, they are baked or air fried for a healthier alternative without sacrificing flavor. Perfect for a sweet snack or dessert, they pair wonderfully with dairy-free chocolate or vegan caramel sauce for dipping.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Dough:

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tbsp coconut sugar
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ tsp sea salt

For Coating:

  • ½ cup organic cane sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

Optional for Dipping:

  • Dairy-free chocolate sauce
  • Vegan caramel sauce

Instructions

  1. Make the Dough: In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the water, coconut sugar, and coconut oil. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves and the mixture just begins to simmer. Turn off the heat, stir in the vanilla extract, then add the flour and salt all at once. Use a wooden spoon to stir vigorously until the dough comes together and pulls away from the sides, forming a smooth ball.
  2. Pipe the Churros: Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip. Pipe the dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet in long strips or any desired shape. If using an air fryer, pipe directly into the air fryer basket lined with parchment.
  3. Bake or Air Fry: For baking, preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake the churros for 18–20 minutes until golden brown. For air frying, set the air fryer to 375°F and cook for 10–12 minutes, flipping halfway through if needed. Churros are done when puffed and lightly golden.
  4. Coat in Cinnamon Sugar: While still warm, toss the churros in the mixture of organic cane sugar and cinnamon until they are evenly coated. The warmth of the churros helps the sugar stick perfectly.
  5. Serve with Dipping Sauce: Enjoy your vegan churros warm, accompanied by dairy-free chocolate sauce or vegan caramel sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • You can choose to either bake or air fry the churros depending on your preference and equipment.
  • Ensure the dough is piped quickly as it can harden, making shaping difficult.
  • For best results, serve the churros immediately after coating to enjoy their crisp texture.
  • To keep churros warm before serving, place them in a warm oven (about 200°F/90°C) for a few minutes.
  • The recipe is vegan and free from dairy, making it suitable for those with lactose intolerance.
