Ingredients
Scale
For the Dough:
- 1 cup water
- 2 tbsp coconut sugar
- 2 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ¼ tsp sea salt
For Coating:
- ½ cup organic cane sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
Optional for Dipping:
- Dairy-free chocolate sauce
- Vegan caramel sauce
Instructions
- Make the Dough: In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the water, coconut sugar, and coconut oil. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves and the mixture just begins to simmer. Turn off the heat, stir in the vanilla extract, then add the flour and salt all at once. Use a wooden spoon to stir vigorously until the dough comes together and pulls away from the sides, forming a smooth ball.
- Pipe the Churros: Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip. Pipe the dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet in long strips or any desired shape. If using an air fryer, pipe directly into the air fryer basket lined with parchment paper.
- Bake or Air Fry: For baking, preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake the churros for 18–20 minutes until golden brown. For air frying, preheat the air fryer to 375°F and cook the churros for 10–12 minutes, flipping halfway through if needed. The churros are done when puffed up and lightly golden.
- Coat in Cinnamon Sugar: While still warm, toss the churros in a mixture of cane sugar and cinnamon evenly until coated. The warmth helps the sugar to stick perfectly to the surface.
- Serve with Dipping Sauce: Enjoy your vegan churros warm, paired with melted dairy-free chocolate sauce or your favorite vegan-friendly sauce for dipping.
Notes
- For crispier churros, air frying is a great alternative to baking and reduces oil use.
- You can customize the dipping sauce to your preference; peanut butter or fruit compotes work well.
- Ensure the dough is slightly cooled before piping to avoid melting the bag or tip.
- If you don’t have a piping bag, use a sturdy plastic bag with a corner cut off, fitted with a star tip if available.
- Store leftover churros in an airtight container and reheat in the oven or air fryer to maintain crispiness.
